Bastille Day in Kep: Celebrate French Gastronomy Month at Kep West

On July 14th, France stops for parades, fireworks and a good table. This year, that spirit lingers longer on the Cambodian coast — Kep West is turning Bastille Day into French Gastronomy Month, eight dishes served all July at Crab & Co.

Bastille Day in Kep: Celebrate French Gastronomy Month at Kep West

A date born of freedom

On July 14th, 1789, a Parisian crowd fed up with bread prices and royal arbitrariness stormed the Bastille — a prison holding just seven inmates, but a fortress standing for absolute privilege. Its fall lit the French Revolution. A year later, the Fête de la Fédération gathered delegates from across France in a rare moment of unity, the spirit that shaped the holiday more than the storming itself. France made it official in 1880, choosing the revolutionary date over a safer one. Ever since: parades, firemen's balls, fireworks, and people gathering around a table.

Eight dishes, eight stories, all July long

Two centuries on, the French still mark that history the same way they mark most things worth remembering — at the table. This year, Kep West is stretching Bastille Day into a full French Gastronomy Month. Throughout July, Crab & Co is serving eight classic dishes drawn from every corner of the French table — from the ceremony of caviar to the simplicity of a brasserie bowl of mussels — each one faithfully prepared and, where it matters most, built around Kep's own crab and the sea just outside the door.

Caviar TSF Oscietra  —  30g $75 · 50g $125

Thirty grams of Oscietra, served the classic Parisian way: warm blinis, chopped shallots, soft-boiled egg, a quenelle of sour cream.

Salade Niçoise  —  $9

Mesclun, tuna, boiled potatoes, French green beans, olives, tomato, egg and bell pepper — the honest, sun-drenched lunch of the Riviera.

Fresh Pacific Oysters  —  Half dozen $16 · Dozen $30

Served with condiments in the purest French tradition, the same species that defines the taste of Brittany and the Bassin d'Arcachon.

Crab Bisque  —  $9

Built from fresh Kep crab, flambéed with Cognac and finished with cream — Kep provides the crab, France provides the method.

Bouillabaisse  —  $22

Scallops, seabass and fresh seafood in a saffron shellfish broth, with grilled croutons, gruyère and a classic rouille.

French Duck Breast with Foie Gras  —  $33

Pan-fried duck breast topped with foie gras, cranberry sauce and a potato gratin — the generous Gascon table, faithfully set in Kep.

Oven Roasted French Corn-Fed Chicken  —  Half $24 · Whole $45

Corn-fed chicken imported from French farms, oven-roasted whole or in half — the dish every French family knows by heart.

Bouchot Mussels  —  $28 (500g)

Imported French bouchot mussels sautéed with white wine and herbs, served with golden French fries — moules-frites, brasserie style.

Whether you're French, Cambodian or simply someone who appreciates a good reason to celebrate, French Gastronomy Month is an open invitation — come raise a glass with us at Crab & Co, Kep West.
